A Very Personal Face

On a more personal note: last night my wife and I learned that my brother in law, who only has a year or so left in his time with the National guard is being called up to active duty in Afghanistan. Hard to say for how long.

We hope to see him once more before he leaves where they live in Alaska to head to the Mid East, and although I was always painfully aware of the human element and cost in our strategies and choices in warfare, suddenly it has a more real and personal face still.

I have to think that if Bush had not chosen the truly optional War in Iraq -- if he had chosen the path of inspections and containment of what turned out to be a non-threat to America -- my brother-in-law Tom would likely not be needed in Afghanistan in a few weeks.
